Job Title: Special Education Aide


Primary Purpose:

                Help special education teacher provide for physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in a special education setting.  Assist in implementation of classroom programs, including self-help, behavior management, and instruction programs.  Work under general supervision of the Principal and Director and immediate direction of the certified teacher.

Location:  Position will require assisting with transportation from Lockney to Lorenzo, serving students in Lorenzo for the instructional day, and assistance with transportation from Lorenzo to Lockney.  Lockney ISD will provide vehicle for transportation.


                -High School Diploma or GED

                -Valid Texas Education Aide Certificate (District can assist with attaining certificate)

                -Ability to work with children with disabilities

                -Ability to follow verbal and written instructions

                -Ability to communicate effectively

                -Knowledge of general office equipment


                Experience working with children preferred


Major Responsibilities and Duties:

                -Help teacher prepare instructional materials and classroom displays

                -Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom

                -Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports

                -Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers

                -Monitor students during  transportation

-Assist students with physical and cognitive disabilities according to their needs, including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting students, and positioning students.

-Assist students with physical and cognitive needs with personal care, including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene.

-Help manage behavior of students.  This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining students who exhibit disruptive or dangerous behaviors.

-Assure responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.

-Work with individual students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher.

-Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom.  This includes, but is not limited to, lunchroom, bus, and playground duties.

-Keep the teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.

-Maintain confidentiality.

-Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.

Working Conditions:

                Mental Demands / Physical Demands / Environmental Factors:

Maintain emotional control under stress.  Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing/pulling and regular heavy lifting of students and equipment.  Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom adaptive equipment.  May be required to lift and position students with physical disabilities; control behavior through physical restraint, and assist non-ambulatory students.  Will be expected to assist in personal care issues and may be exposed to bacteria, communicable disease, or other biological hazards.

This position will be to serve special education students from Lockney and other schools that participate in the special education services coop.  This position will be an employee of Lorenzo ISD.



                Salary begins at approximately $18,500 for an applicant with no experience. 

                The District will adjust the salary for experience in this field.


EPEC currently has two Aide Positions Open.  This description will serve one of those positions.  The second position is identical in nature but will require a Texas CDL Driver’s License with a School Bus Endorsement.The position with the CDL will qualify for greater earning capacity.

1. Bachelor’s Degree or higher degree with major in assigned area.

2. Advanced experience with LLI and reading intervention.

3. A minimum of three years teaching experience.

4. Demonstrates a commitment to ongoing education/continuing professional development.

Reports to: Building Principals

Job Goals: To provide leadership, coordination, collaboration, and innovation in reading curriculum and instruction, so that each student may drive maximum benefit from the PK-5 reading curriculum.

Performance Responsibilities: Advisory

1. Observes disabled readers in the classroom, upon teacher’s request.

2. Assists classroom teachers in the diagnosis of students and collaborates in planning the instructional strategies.

3. Assists in the selection of appropriate materials utilized by the classroom teacher for corrective measures.

4. Provides demonstrations of new methods and materials (i.e. team teaching)

5. Interprets and disseminates results of comprehension tests to teachers.

Developmental Reading

1. Develops and implements a remediation plan for students not on current grade level reading. .

2. Utilizes the Reading Recovery method of intervention and instruction for primary students.

3. Is responsible for maintaining the leveled literature collection.

 4. Plans and conducts periodic evaluations to assess the need for changes in the reading program.


 1. Plans and develops special reading projects as approved or provided.

2. Serves as a resource to the board and administration in areas of reading instruction and curriculum.

3. Provides leadership in the development and implementation of the PK-5 reading program.

4. Ensures that reading is a component of the PK-5Language Arts.


1. Assesses the reading referrals of parents/guardians, teachers, and support staff.

2. To provide for remedial instructional needs of students PK- 5 through collaboration with LES staff, occasional small group instruction and staff development in content area reading strategies.

Terms of Employment: Regular Professional Teacher Status.

Evaluation: Performance will be assessed annually by the principal(s).
